How much does wheelchair accessible home design cost?

Costs range from $2,000-$5,000 for simple modifications like grab bars and lever handles, $15,000-$35,000 for bathroom renovations, and $50,000-$100,000+ for comprehensive whole-home accessibility. Individual stairlifts cost $3,000-$15,000, while wheelchair ramps average $1,500-$5,000.
Most municipalities require permits for permanent ramps, especially those exceeding 30 inches in height. TD Design handles all permitting, ensuring your ramp meets local codes and safety standards.
The ADA recommends a maximum 1:12 slope—one inch of rise per 12 inches of length. This ensures safe, independent use for most wheelchair users.
Straight stairlift installation takes 3-4 hours. Curved stairlifts require 4-6 hours for installation, with 6-10 weeks total timeline for custom rail manufacturing.
Medicare typically doesn’t cover stairlifts, though some Medicare Advantage and Medicaid programs include home modification benefits. Veterans may qualify for VA grants. Coverage varies by policy and state.
Wheelchair-accessible doorways need 36 inches of clear passage space. Standard 30-32 inch residential doors require widening to 38-inch doors (providing 36 inches clear).
